
Modern Saris Exhibition Coming to Birmingham Arts Centre

A fascinating exhibition showcasing modern and experimental saris, including some made from denim and even steel threads, is set to open at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham this month. The exhibition, titled ‘Offbeat Sari’, will be on display from 28 June to 2 November.
Exploring the Evolution of the Sari
The exhibition features nearly 60 saris created in the past 15 years, ranging from a replica of a garment designed for Lady Gaga to those worn by a women’s vigilante group in India and a skateboarder from Canada.
Priya Khanchandani, the exhibition’s lead curator, explained that in the UK, saris are often perceived as something worn only on special occasions or by older generations. However, she stressed that the sari is much more dynamic than that and has been constantly evolving, with many younger women experimenting with it.
Unique Saris from Around the World
Among the exhibits is a luxury sari created for Lady Gaga in 2010, designed by Mumbai-born fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani, made from a fabric known as foil jersey. Another highlight includes saris worn by the
